But for a lot of industrial applications—conveyors, pumps, fans—a standard AC gearmotor with a VFD is the simpler and more cost-effective solution.

A VFD (variable frequency drive) changes the speed of an AC motor by controlling frequency. You can use it with a SEW-Eurodrive gearmotor, but the motor selection has to match the drive. I do not want to push you into over-engineering. If you need controlled stopping and multi-point positioning, consider a servo system. If you need adjustable speed and reliable torque, look at the AC plus VFD route first.

One practical hint: the manual for the gearmotor and the drive should show the same wiring and braking details. If you're ordering a VFD, ask for the wiring diagram at the same time you request the gearbox manual. That saves a second round of emails.

Step 5: Start with a small order if you're testing a new product or vendor

A trial order of one gearmotor, a set of seals, and the matching SEW Eurodrive gearbox manual is not a waste of anyone's time. It's how you learn whether the product fits, whether the manual is complete, and whether the distributor actually supports smaller customers.
